What is it?
Rezūm is a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) – an enlarged prostate. It uses steam (water vapour) therapy to shrink excess prostate tissue that blocks urine flow. The heat from the steam destroys targeted prostate cells, and over time the body absorbs them, relieving symptoms.
Why is it done?
Rezūm is offered to men with bothersome urinary symptoms from BPH, such as:
- Weak or slow urine stream
- Difficulty starting urination
- Frequent urination (especially at night)
- Urgency and incomplete bladder emptying
- Interrupted sleep and impact on quality of life
The Procedure:
- Performed in clinic or day-surgery setting
- Local anaesthesia, sedation, or light general anaesthesia may be used
- A small device is passed into the urethra to deliver bursts of steam into the prostate
- Each treatment takes only seconds; the entire procedure usually lasts 10–15 minutes
- A temporary catheter may be needed for a few days afterwards while swelling settles
Benefits:
- Minimally invasive – no cuts or major surgery
- Can be done under local anaesthetic
- Preserves sexual function better than many surgical options
- Symptom improvement often seen within weeks, with continued improvement for several months
- Durable results, with many men remaining symptom-free for years
Risks & Considerations:
- Temporary swelling of the prostate may worsen symptoms for 1–2 weeks
- Blood in urine, burning, or urgency for a short time after treatment
- Risk of infection or urinary retention (rare)
- May not be suitable for very large prostates
- Some men may still require medications or further treatment later
Recovery:
- Most men return to normal activities within a few days
- Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, or sexual activity for 1–2 weeks
- Catheter usually removed after 2–5 days
- Long-term follow-up is important to monitor symptoms and prostate health
Why seek advice?
Rezūm is a safe, effective, and less invasive alternative to traditional prostate surgery. It offers symptom relief with a lower risk of sexual side effects, making it an appealing option for many men with BPH.
